In the summer of 2012, a law came into effect that requires Oregon schools to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plans, emphasizing prevention and the use of "low-impact" pesticides in order to better protect children from adverse health impacts. Oregon's law also requires schools to notify parents and other members of the school community whenever pesticides are to be used.

In 2014-2015 NCAP completed a Special Report titled "Oregon Schools are Reducing Pesticides: An Analysis of State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Legislation." The report analyzes the success of the Oregon IPM in schools law to share the good news that school IPM is working and children and employees are safer and have reduced risks associated with pesticide exposure. As an independent organization, we understood the need to evaluate the effectiveness of laws we helped put in place to reduce pesticides. This report includes background information on the law and a summary of survey results from 123 IPM coordinators across the state, representing 197 campuses.

Expanding IPM Laws in the Northwest

NCAP is working to support the Oregon IPM Law and to expand IPM to schools around the northwest. We are building a network of parents and community members who want to protect kids in schools through IPM.
